'Not just a Duty, an 'Edge!'

As a paralegal, you still need to keep learning. With different case law appearing all of the time study requires a legal professional to be updated and informed in a very timely manner. This will always keep you ahead of the game and will help to accelerate your career. The mandatory requirement for Continuing Education Credits is what separates the legal professional from other jobs. You are required to stay up with the requirements of Business and Professions Code section 6450 for paralegals or Business and Professions section 6070 for lawyers. Also, the firm you're employed by will most certainly mandate that all staff keep abreast of periodical updates and CLE credits. While the credits vary state by state, in California the current update requirement for Paralegals is 8 credits every 2 years. Without this you have, in essence, lost your Paralegal status and cannot be billed out as such.
A look at the Basics
- Courses are designed for Paralegals (PL), but are also certified for Lawyers
- Paralegals, 2 years after graduation have to update your profession with CLE units and must continue this process every 2 years thereafter. Attorneys are also required to have CLE units to be with compliant. Attorneys have somewhat different requirements, but must always be up to date.
