Human Resource - Your Inside Out Advantage
by Ric Riccobono/Director

Of the many articles we do at Legal Field Careers and THORNHILL, this one may provide one of the more enlightening ones for those interested in pursuing a HR Management position. Unlike articles you may run across from other sources out there on the vast internet of information overload that simply throw you tips and basic practices, THRONHILL tries to add an extra element of what I refer to as 'Think Expansion', sort of like giving your thinking process a steroid boost. In this sense, being given an answer is not as effective as understanding 'how you arrived at the Answer', and it is that process that will give you an advantage over others in the field of decision making to pursue that highly paid positional career as a Human Resource Manager. So in this article, we ask the question, have you taken yourself for granted?

This then brings us to a question that many of you probably wonder about, how exactly do you become an HR Manager? It's sort of like breaking into the Movie industry. In order to get a part you need your SAG card, but in order to get your SAG card you need to land a part. The Job gets you the Card and the Card gets you the Job, but if you have neither you have to earn them both in some creative way. With work in the HR field it may be a little less complicated in practice, but the principle is the same. To land that high paying HR Manager position, experience and communication skills are the key. Ok, so you say, 'but I have great communication skills, just no experience', ie; the Card vs Job example given above. Well, is that entirely true? So stop here for a second and see if you can understand where this is all going and more importantly, how you can calculate it in your scheme of becoming an HR Manager.

To illustrate this, write down everything you do that requires a decision on your part. I'm talking about a self-made decision, not one that has been decided for you by your parents, employer, teacher, etc. For Example, here are some seemingly simple and basic questions to ask yourself and rate how well you do in each:

1 Do you decide what time to get up each day in order to meet your work or school requirement, or even a personal one?

2 Do you decide what time to turn in at night in order to get enough sleep to handle the next day’s events?

3 Do you decide what time to take for lunch each day and ensure you take a periodical break to recharge your batteries?

4 If you're in business for yourself, do you decide what supplier or vendor to use to fulfill a specific need?

5 Do you decide what software you may need to do a specific job function?

6 Do you decide what financial areas to get involved in on your own?

7 Do you handle disputes with creditors on your own or seek help?

Figure it out, well; doesn't every single sample above contain a variety of basic elements you’d be dealing with as a Human Resource Manager? All of the above are just a very few examples to consider, but they only serve one purpose, to answer simply by a yes or no. In other words, with #1-3 regarding time scheduling, this can be related to establishing or ensuring staff hours and when to take breaks, how to handle situations if those times are not met or may have to be adjusted to conform to company needs and requirements and why sticking to those times are important for best effectiveness. # 4-7 directly applies to decisions of importance and communication skills that you would have to make as a HR Manager. Making the best solutions can set you apart from others who simply guess at it, thereby making you a valued and even indispensable employee. So as you see, you've probably acquired skills you never really gave much thought to as being of value before because you just took them for granted.

This is basically is a prior-existing set of elements that you may already have experience in which you can build upon even before you complete your Human Resource Course. That's why we are putting this article in the HR Section instead of the Paralegal or Legal Secretary Section, because as an HR Manager, one of your job tasks may be actually hiring a Paralegal or Legal Secretary. These include all tools/skills you'll need and can use to your advantage. In other words use any and all of the skills you have developed as your assets as you go forward, don't overlook them or underestimate your strong suits, beef up you're weak spots.

The whole purpose of this article is to get you to look at the basics that many of you probably overlook on a daily basis, that is, it's not the answer to a problem or situation, but more importantly the 'Way-Why-How. The 'Way' you arrived at it, 'Why' you made it and 'How' you solved it. Often you'll find that, when you analyze it that everything involved is better described as 'experience' which has involved research, networking, human instinct, diplomacy, negotiating skills, common sense reliance, communication skills and more.

Use the various articles we have already provided for you along with what you're learning or going to learn in your Legal Field Careers Courses to support, boost and grow your skills. You will build a strong foundation rapidly from the 'Inside Out'.
