If you review some of our recent tips and resources you'll find that there are many more options for Paralegals that expand far from the obvious than you may have considered or that other colleges throughout the country will even aprise you of. So keeping in line with our advanced tips and resources of the Thornhill Advantage, here is another maximum impact option that you may want to consider that pertains specifically for a paralegal career opportunity in the Aerospace Industry. As with the unlimited and impossible-to-imagine vast expanse of space, your paralegal career potential has a correlative expanse opportunity all it's own, all you have to do is explore it. Just as with the continual desire in space exploration, you too can launch your career with a unique exploration of your paralegal career opportunity in aerospace. So get ready for liftoff and let's explore a new career frontier as I can guarantee you that what you think of a PL career in Aerospace now, is going to expand when you finish what you're about to read.

Keep in mind that this article is focusing on the modern era commercialization business as it pertains to space industry opportunities, not so much the airline industry, that also has some interesting potential for paralegals, but that's for another topic. To begin with, a brief Aerospace history is necessary. Realize this, major aerospace space/launch vehicles from a few years back dealt with considerable DOD (Department of Defense) applications as well as commercial, usually involving satellite firms. Major firms such as GDSS (General Dynamics Space Systems) and Martin Marietta, the two top dogs of the 80's and 90's, were all referred to as ELV's, (Expendable Launch Vehicle) companies. This term, although not entirely encompassing as yet, has given way to 'Reusable' Launch Vehicles. Meaning, with ELV's it meant what it said, send it up, launch the payload and that's it! A one shot deal. The 'reusable' or cyclical factor now provides for just that, send it up, when it comes back to earth retrieve it, polish it up and 're'-use it again. A huge advancement in aerospace technological accomplishment. The benefit? Much lower cost launch operations, and what does that one do? You guessed it, opens up the doors for more potential and expansive competitive business. Starting to see the opportunity here yet?

Once you start to research and understand the basic functions of the Aerospace Industry and the futuristic possibilities you'll rapidly begin to see a lot of areas of opportunity where your advanced PL/LDA services can be valuable application to any aerospace firm.

Just to start, here's a very brief list of just a few basic but current job opportunity titles for Paralegals in the Aerospace Industry. You'll probably be familiar with each of their functions, just not quite traditionally related in a way you're going to consider here. (Remember, here at LFC/LAVC all Legal Secretary/Legal Admin job titles are run under the Paralegal Academy-inclusive)

Legal Administrator/Legal Secretary

Contracts Representative

Contracts Administrator

Contracts Manager

Empowered Official (Export)

Executive Legal Administrative Assistant

Now let's take the above and see how they fit in to some common functions. While all are applicable to many other business types, they are potentially as applicable to the Aerospace Industry. The following will give you a basic/general idea of what the duties and expectations associated with some of the categories may include. Scan through them to see how many of these you're familiar with:

•    Triage and organize all forms of communication as desired including incoming calls, messages and correspondence received.
•    Act as liaison and facilitate communications between the law department and clients, assess urgency of situation and determine appropriate action.
•    Verbally and electronically communicate a wide variety of information to multiple audiences.

Another LFC / LAVC High-Velocity Edge

Now, here's your Edge - Familiarity! As we hammer you with all throughout our articles, take apart the above duty classifications and research how you can 'Familiarize' yourself with them as they may directly apply to various categories and operational functions of the Aerospace Industry. So by associating Aerospace functions with the above duties you'll have a decided edge over anyone just walking in the door with a standard paralegal point of view. We're not suggesting you 'come-on' or dress up as Captain Kirk or Hans Solo, but you should be starting to get the idea. Application familiarity, that's the 2 key words here, apply yourself, apply your knowledge of what you'll learn as a PL Graduate here and apply that to your 'familiarization' of Aerospace functions and duties.

Expanding Aerospace Firms means Expanded Career Opportunities!

Now, just in case you're saying to yourself, "well, it sounds good but what are there one or two of these firms?" Hardly, let's take a look at some of the new companies in aerospace. Space X is one of the big players of course, Boeing and Lockheed Martin are battling it out for competition, oh and yes, Martin Marietta merged with Lockheed in 1995. You also have Blue Origin, the Jeff Bezos company, and Amazon founder, also Bigelow Aerospace from the controversial founder Robert Bigelow, plus SpaceDev and Virgin Galactic, and these are not all. The aerospace industry is on cutting edge of future space commercialization and exploration. And why did I single out the ones above? Because each one is capable of manned space flight. Whenever we send a man/woman to Mars, it will probably be on a space craft from one of these firms.

As a paralegal function, insurance is something you'd probably run across in many firms. But here's one for you that's considerably more involved. Just to charge your brain on this one, let's a quick look at one example here in 3 main elements of aerospace functions. The giant ELV companies of the 80s-90's were no different than today's advanced firms in the sense that they all had/have to deal with various forms of red tape and launch and payload insurance issues. One of them being, every ELV firm must pass the DOT (Department of Transportation) regulatory requirements regarding Launch Pad insurance policies in the 1/2 Billion dollar range. The purpose of this is spelled out in a very detailed DOT multi-stage system that basically covered three very important aspects. One, what happens if the ELV blows up on-it's-way-to, on the launch pad or after launch. Two, the type of cargo it was carrying in the Faring (Nose Cone) and the type of danger it imposes to the jeopardized area around the launch pad, and three, possibly the highest degree of concern, the type of space debris it could generate and the contamination levels it presents in both lower and upper atmosphere in either orbital or stationary space ie; LEO (Low Earth's Orbit-120 miles) and GEO (Geosynchronus Earth's Orbit-22,000+miles). This is one factor that had a drastic affect on Martin Marietta's exit as an individual firm from the Space service industry as they had some very costly launch disasters. Now what does that brief introduction cause you to think of regarding your paralegal career, 'aerospace accident attorneys?" Well not exactly, but you should by now start to get the idea for vast potential here.

On a business expansion note, realize that the recent reusable launch vehicle success we mentioned is not to be taken lightly and bears repeating. Ir represents yet another example of how the advancement of technology evolves and spawns extended business opportunities and economic advancement horizons. I can almost guarantee you that virtually no one reading this article fully understands the value of that milestone. But, once again and as always, here's your LFC/LAVC High Velocity career edge, by 'You' knowing historic technical elements like revealed here, and there are many others, you'll be looked at as not just a PL competing for a job, whoops excuse me, 'wash my mouth out with soap', I mean 'Career', but as someone who has shown the dedicated interest and time to familiarize yourself with actual working aspects/functions of this exciting and highly advanced/advancing industry.

A ton of legal prep work has to be hammered out prior to launch and should anything go afoul, there you go, legal damage control and more paralegal need. And that's just some basic examples we've covered. So don't think at all that the Aerospace Industry is only for Rocket Scientists and people in straight-jackets signing up in advance for a one-way trip to go live in a 400 sq ft container on Mars. Before any of that happens, it's the planning, preparation, development - and - the extensive legal framework requirements necessary to allow all of this to take place before the countdown can even begin (…oh, and the Mars trip can't happen until they get the contract done to put a McDonalds up there of course…).

So if Aerospace intrigues you and you feel like applying your High Velocity PL/LDA education in this direction, then get creative and go over the list of basic duties and functions as listed earlier. You should also take some personal time to do some studying on the aerospace industry and DOT regulatory requirements, scan through them with the intent to 'basically' familiarize yourself with the aerospace operations and learn some of the basic terms such as given to you here. You'll be two jumps ahead of anyone else trying to compete in this exciting and highly rewarding career. Aerospace ground control has a 'well-defined' pre-launch strategic checklist countdown, you should have one too, so start your clock and Prepare to Launch your 'High-Velocity' career...it's 7 months and counting!...
